Epoxy flooring is only as good as the substrate beneath it. A hollow, hump, or contamination in the concrete will telegraph through the epoxy, creating defects that are impossible to fix without complete removal. For Sydney epoxy flooring contractors, pumped self levelling is the essential first step.
Why Epoxy Needs Perfect Preparation
Epoxy is a thin, rigid coating that follows the substrate exactly. Any variation in the concrete surface will be visible in the finished floor. Hollows create thin spots where the epoxy is insufficient. Humps create thick spots that cure differently and may crack. Contaminants like oil, dust, or moisture prevent the epoxy from bonding.
Epoxy manufacturers specify a maximum deviation of 3mm over 2 metres for the substrate. Most concrete slabs are 5 to 10mm out. Levelling is not optional: it is mandatory for warranty coverage.
Self Levelling for Epoxy Preparation
A 3mm to 5mm layer of self levelling compound pumped onto the slab creates a flat, smooth, contaminant-free surface. The product is Hychem-backed, so it is compatible with Hychem epoxy systems and carries a manufacturer's warranty. Because the batch is mixed mechanically by weight, the product performs exactly as specified.
For industrial epoxy floors, heavy-duty formulations with higher compressive strength are available. For fast-turnaround projects, rapid-cure formulations allow epoxy installation within 24 hours of the levelling pour.
Moisture and Contamination Control
