Tile Underlayment Sydney: Large Format Tile Preparation

Large format tiles are unforgiving. A 600 x 1200mm tile on a slightly uneven slab will rock, creating lippage, hollow spots, and eventual cracking. For Sydney tilers and builders, pumped self levelling underlayment is the only way to guarantee a flat substrate before large format tiles go down.

Why Large Format Tiles Need Perfect Substrates

Large format tiles have minimal flexural strength. When laid on an uneven surface, they bridge over hollows and rock on humps. The result is lippage (height differences between adjacent tiles), which is a defect under Australian Standards. Over time, the rocking motion causes the adhesive to fail and the tile to crack.

Tile industry standards specify a maximum deviation of 3mm over 2 metres for large format tile installation. A typical concrete slab is 5 to 10mm out over the same distance.

Self Levelling Underlayment for Tiles

A 3mm to 5mm layer of self levelling compound pumped onto the slab creates a dead-flat surface. The product flows into every hollow and smooths over every hump, giving the tiler a perfect base for tile adhesive. Because the product is batched mechanically by weight, every batch has the same flow characteristics and the same cure time.

PowerPump's Hychem-backed system is compatible with all standard tile adhesives. The printed docket for every pour gives you documentation for the project file and warranty support.

Speed and Cost Benefits

A pumped underlayment pour takes hours, not days. The floor is ready for tiling the next day. For Sydney builders and tilers, the time savings and the elimination of lippage callbacks make pumped underlayment the most cost-effective option.
