Self Levelling vs Traditional Screed: Sydney Comparison

Builders in Sydney often ask whether self levelling compound or traditional sand-cement screed is the better choice. The answer depends on the project, but for most modern builds, pumped self levelling wins on speed, quality, and compliance.

What Is Traditional Sand-Cement Screed?

Traditional screed is a sand-cement mixture applied by hand with a straight edge or screed bar. It is mixed on site, typically in a cement mixer or by hand in a barrow, and applied in layers of 20 to 50mm. It is strong, durable, and suitable for heavy-duty applications, but it is slow, labour-intensive, and inconsistent.

What Is Self Levelling Compound?

Self levelling compound is a pre-formulated cement-based product that flows under its own weight to create a flat surface. It is typically applied at 3 to 15mm depth and is designed for speed and consistency. Pumped self levelling is mixed mechanically by weight on a truck and delivered through a hose.

Speed Comparison

Traditional screed2 to 3 days3 to 4
Hand-mixed levelling1 to 2 days2 to 3
Pumped self levelling3 to 4 hours2 (operator + crew)

For Sydney builders with tight programmes, the speed difference is the deciding factor. A pumped screed truck finishes a level in a morning, not a week.

Quality and Consistency

Traditional screed quality depends on the mixer's skill. Water ratios vary, aggregate sizes vary, and finish quality varies. Self levelling compound is factory-formulated and mechanically mixed, so every batch is identical. The result is a flatter, more consistent surface with fewer callbacks.

Compliance and Safety

Traditional screed and hand-mixed levelling both generate silica dust on site. NSW Chapter 8A and the Silica Worker Register make this a compliance issue. Pumped screed eliminates on-site mixing and therefore eliminates silica dust exposure.

Cost Comparison

On material cost alone, traditional screed is cheaper. But when labour, programme time, cleanup, and compliance costs are included, pumped self levelling is almost always cheaper on a total-project basis. A programme saving of two days is worth more than any material cost difference.
